I hesitated to reply, since I don't have any first-hand experience with this, but it looks like the Persistent::DBI modules are addressing that issue.

The home site for these modules seems to be down/gone/whatever.

In any case, it looks like David Winters put a lot of thought into it, perhaps he could help you ?
