I realize this is getting a bit off-topic, since my suggestion has little to do with desert islands... ;-) However, for those of us living on the tundra, the Cold Weather Survival Guide, by Frank Heyl and Harley Sachs appears to be quite valuable.

Also, I have it on good authority that the survival tool to have is a magnesium flint stick.
