I think the OP understood that much:

Obviously this involves a trivial amount of work with seek and tell, and some way of squirrelling away the necessary context somewhere else.
I think the question was whether there's a module on CPAN that will do that for you.

Do not rebuke them with harsh words ... but rather lead them gently - with URLs - so that they may learn wisdom.
