Here is some code to further illustrate

$xml->emptyTag('elem', attr => '®');

$xml->end;
print $doc;

[download]
This prints out... 
<root>
  <elem attr="&amp;reg;" />
</root>

[download]
However, what I wanted was... 
<root>
  <elem attr="&reg;" />
</root>

[download]
Is this possible with XML::Writer?
