Regardless of whether performance matters or not I think its bad practice to write inefficient code when its just as easy to write more efficient code. The important part being "just as easy". If its not just as easy then you have to do cost benefit analysis. If it is just as easy why do something inefficient? Code that is sloppy in this way tends to suffer from death by a thousand cuts. Profiling it doesnt help as the slowdown is distributed too widely, so all you are left with is a total rewrite. Which can be very expensive.
