I'm a bit new at perl so I can't really create what I'm suggesting here, so take it with a dab of salt.

With regular expressions, maybe phrasing a challenge the same way as you have now but using a submit field which would check it for validity. This would enable someone to quickly test their regex skills instead of constructing repetitive programs for each example.

Just an idea. Actually I'm going to try and make a CGI for this.
