Esteemed monks, do you know of a CPAN module or an algorithm to reduce the number of datapoints in a graph?

Given a large number of x-y coordinates which can be connected to form a wiggly line, I'd like to specify something like "no more than N values per unit of x/y" and get a new (approximated) set of x-y coordinates.
