Hi all,

my $s = '::'; my @fields; for my $s ( '::', ':', '' ){ for my $lim ( 0, -1 ){ print "s=$s, limit=$lim\n"; @fields = split( ':', $s, $lim ); print "fields=".@fields."\n"; } }
the output is
s=::, limit=0 fields=0 s=::, limit=-1 fields=3 s=:, limit=0 fields=0 s=:, limit=-1 fields=2 s=, limit=0 fields=0 s=, limit=-1 fields=0

The discontinuity in the output from split(':','',-1) (last line) is evident. A '' is certainly an "empty field". (Whether it is leading or trailing possibly depends on the way you look at the string :):).)

A '' should be considered a trailing empty field for any delimiter, and split in the last case should return ('').
