You're getting exactly the results that one would expect, given that ...

your sort function is sorting first by word length, and second by alphabetical order.
beta, zeta, alpha, apple, delta, gamma, foolish mortal, gamma globulin +, gesorenplatz!!

Isn't that what you wanted to get?

You aren't by any chance looking at the results of Cache after sort, are you?  (Of course that won't be sorted, since it's dependant on hash order).

Or, if this still hasn't answered the question, please clarify:  what results did you hope to get?

Update:  Never mind (must drink more coffee).  I actually tried the code, but "fixed" it inadverently (the way japhy describes above), then mistook the "expected results" for the actual results.  Forget I said anything.
