As I always say on IRC and occasionally here, TMTOWTDI includes ways that don't involve perl. Use what works. If the company line is towed by PHP but it's an otherwise decent job, learn PHP. If you feel dirty using PHP, spend some time trying to convert parts of the application to perl or use perl in other places to make hard tasks easier. Et cetera.
