I haven't used MIME::Lite's SMTP transport, but usually you can trap fatal exceptions by using an eval BLOCK construct: 
eval {
   $msg->send('smtp','mail.shs.siemens.com');
};
warn "Trapped error: $@\n" if $@;
# code continues here
