As a variation on ysth's suggestion, you could require that the mocking class implement the 'mocks' method:

ref($obj) eq 'OP' || $obj->can('mocks') && $obj->mocks('OP')

Of course, if 'mocks' it handled through AUTOLOAD, this will fail.
