As a side note, if you're planning on actually using the 5.8.8 installation, your programs should begin with #!/library/perl, otherwise you'll be using the standard Perl that comes with 10.4.7 (which I think is 5.8.6).

I'm not familiar with AlphaX at all - does it have any preferences to tell it where perl is located perhaps?
