this morning, i gave a quick (or tried to be quick) overview of perl. these people program in C/C++, Fortran, C-Shell on a regular basis, and allegedly sed and awk.

i was getting odd questions like "tell me again about difference between single and double quoting?", "what was that += again?". goes on ad nauseum.

my supervisor has specifically said to not try and teach alternative quoting, e.g. qw(), q(), qq(), etc. which really gets in my ***, since they can be so useful.

the exception is backticks, since they look so much like single quotes on some of our unixen, i think he is going to allow me to teach and establish a local prohibition against backticks, and use qx() instead.

i didn't even try to show pattern matching. supposedly for another day, but i doubt it.

i am considering throwing in the towel and remain the only perl scripter here.

do y'all think i am overreacting to feeling hopeless?
