Another approach which may be suitable if it's only line-breaks you're interested in may be to use a substitution.

use warnings;

my $msg = 'Hello\nWorld';
print "Msg was $msg\n";
$msg =~ s/\\n/\n/g;
print "Msg is $msg\n";
