I don't recall if it's actually necessary on OSX, but some time ago I ended up putting the following in my .profile or .bashrc so I never have to think about it ever again:
export DISPLAY=localhost:0.0
s**lil*; $*=join'',sort split q**; s;.*;grr; &&s+(.(.)).+$2$1+; $; = qq-$_-;s,.*,ahc,;$,.=chop for split q,,,reverse;print for($,,$;,$*,$/)
