Here's another thought: run your Daemon in the foreground: 

 newdaemon(
        progname        => 'ticktockd',
        pidfile         => '/var/run/ticktockd.pid',
        configfile      => '/etc/ticktockd.conf',
        foreground      => 1,
 );

[download]
If it's running in the background you may never see any output.
