Though APL used a funny alphabet (ever seen a selectric typeball for APL?), its data types were no richer than Perl's. The difference (iirc) was that there were different operators for different types.
I believe that Perl with PDL can do everything APL could do, without special fonts and remapped keyboards.
APL's character set exists in unicode, code points in the 2300's.
