I would say your friend confused Sparta with Athens. Spartans didn't write anything, not even their laws. Even though they were very educated, I think I've never read anywhere they were considered as bringers of civilisation.

The movie portrays fascination with the ancient world and the imagination of the cartoonist and the movie director only.

Sparta was brutal, the whole world was brutal. The warriors and philosophers were the same. Saints and sinners were implemented a little later :-)
