According to the docs it supports icmp: 
    $p = Net::Ping->new("icmp");
    foreach $host (@host_array)
    {
        print "$host is ";
        print "NOT " unless $p->ping($host, 2);
        print "reachable.\n";
        sleep(1);
    }
    $p->close();
