What has been changed? Perl is now much less loved. Check your local book store, how many php books they have and how many Perl?
Last time I checked the Chapters close to my home, they had 2 perl books, 5 ruby ones and 4 python ones. I am not a php fan personally, so didn't count php, but my impression is that perl + ruby + python is close to php, more or less.
