Tangentially of note: your use of prototypes (save the () on newline possibly) is extraneous and subject to the same advice from the second paragraph that I just wrote yesterday . . .
Update: And the () prototype on indent combined with the action-at-a-distance dependency on the file-scope lexical $depth raises the hackles as well (even if you were using prototypes needfully).
