If you want to eliminate the ambiguity entirely, you'll probably need to revise the sentence structure, not just reword it slightly. Try something like "This is called a soft reference or symbolic reference, and can cause all sorts of trouble if you use it by accident. The declaration use strict 'refs' disables this feature."
