always seem to return 1?!
Not for me:
C:\> perl -lwe "printf '<%s>', -t STDIN" <1> C:\> perl -e1 | perl -lwe "printf '<%s>', -t STDIN" <> C:\> perl -lwe "printf '<%s>', -t STDIN" < AUTOEXEC.BAT <>
