Its not obvious from your code where this variable comes from, but the existance of a variable and the contents are two different things. You'll get more mileage with something like:

  • if ( $fnmi eq 'someword' ) { # do stuff }
  • if ( $fnmi =~ /^someword$/  ) { # do stuff }
