Most scientific data formats have headers in them, (eg. FITS, GeoTIFF). I don't deal with earth images, but you'll probably want to locate the FGDC compliant metadata for the images to determine how to register it, if they're not already in a format that includes that information as headers.

If you need more information on the subject, the concept you're looking for is called 'georeferencing'.
