Remove the space from "> &". ">&" is an "open mode" like ">>" and "+<" and even ">&=". In modern Perl, you might even prefer to put the mode in a separate argument: 

open( OLDOU­T, ">&", STDOUT )
    or  die "Can't dup STDOUT to OLDOUT: $!\n";
