Define "takes some time". If it's something that can be done overnight and it takes less than 8 hours, you're fine. In other words, don't optimize without demonstrating a need to do so.
My criteria for good software:
  1. Does it work?
  2. Can someone else come in, make a change, and be reasonably certain no bugs were introduced?
