I already gave an answer in that thread in Re: The cost of unchecked best practices. It is to more safely deal with changing requirements when using a regex as a parsing tool.
My criteria for good software:
  1. Does it work?
  2. Can someone else come in, make a change, and be reasonably certain no bugs were introduced?
