you need to quote it either using \Q ... \E or quotemeta: 
my $jim = "jim(";
my $string = "A string with jim( in it";

print "yeah" if $string =~ m/\Q$jim\E/;

#or

$jim = quotemeta $jim;
print "yeah" if $string =~ m/$jim/;
