I would suggest you look into the much simpler Net::SSH2 and it's included module Net::SSH2::SFTP. Installing Net::SSH2 is a pleasant joy compared to the pain and aggravation of Net::SFTP (well, actually, all the pain is in Net::SSH::Perl).
