I see this behaviour with Linux 2.6.25.3, but not with Linux 2.6.23.1-21. I don't have any intermediate versions to narrow down where the relevant change is.
The problem occurs with Redhat RPM perl and with a perl I compiled myself, including a recompile of perl on 2.6.25.3.
