You're close -- the regex will return a list context with each matched value, particularly if you use /g. So do: 
$mystring = join(' ', ( $myString =~ /\"(.+?)\"/g) );

And that should be able to do it. (Update...after fixing that first operator to be '=', not '=~'....)
