Then you'll either want to use fork and waitpid or one of the many Fork modules on cpan that do that for you, such as Parallel::ForkManager.
My criteria for good software:
  1. Does it work?
  2. Can someone else come in, make a change, and be reasonably certain no bugs were introduced?
