\' doesn't work in single-quoted literals in bourne shell. 
$ echo 'foo\'bar'
>                      <- waits for closing '

[download]

Fixes: 

$ echo foo\'bar
foo'bar
$ echo "foo'bar"
foo'bar
$ echo 'foo'\''bar'
foo'bar
$ echo 'foo'"'"'bar'
foo'bar
