Have you considered Erlang - yaws is written in it and seems to have very interesting initial performance statistics. While not as fast as C, it scales much better than C ever possibly could.
My criteria for good software:
  1. Does it work?
  2. Can someone else come in, make a change, and be reasonably certain no bugs were introduced?
