Knowing that this has been discussed, I Super Searched for "thank you" and found To thank or not to thank?. You may want to read that for historical perspectives on thanking. Though, I have to admit, you've summed it up pretty well... you sure you hadn't looked for this already and just hiding it from us? :-)
