I've noticed a problem with two modules since upgrading to perl5.10 on cygwin. For both Devel::Cover and DBD::SQLite the make install aborts with the following alarming message:
Now, my first reaction was 'WTF?! Why do you want to CREATE /usr/bin ?' I poked around and found that INSTALLSITESCRIPT in the Makefile is directing the install to copy some scripts to this location. That's fine with me, I'm effectively root (as most cygwin users are), but what's with the create?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! +!! ERROR: Can't create '/usr/bin' Do not have write permissions on '/usr/bin' !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! +!!
I found I could work around the problem by editing the Makefile (the value of INSTALLSITESCRIPT must be a directory which does not exist), but I'm sure there's a more elegant way. I'd like to report this as a bug somewhere, but I don't know whether the problem is in the Build info for these two modules, or whether it's MakeMaker, cygwin, perl5.10 or somewhere else entirely. Maybe this info will help someone as is, but hopefully someone can help find a better fix.
