I normally use the cpan shell as root. I now want to use it as myself, to install some modules into my home directory. I'm having trouble configuring it and my googling has failed me :(

Can anybody point me to a comprehensive tutorial?

My current issue is that an install fails with: 
Running make install
Appending installation info to /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.6/i586-linux-thread-
+multi/perllocal.pod
/bin/sh: /usr/lib/perl5/5.8.6/i586-linux-thread-multi/perllocal.pod: P
+ermission denied

but I haven't found any info on how to use a personal location and/or not record the info.
