Most likely, you're on Windows. You should always (even on Unixish OSes, nowadays) use binmode on filehandles you're reading that are not supposed to contain text:

open ($myimage, '<', $imagelocation)
    or die "cannot open '$imagelocation': $!";
binmode $myimage;

...
