The first time I heard the term "display logic" was from Ovid long long ago in a perl.com article. Now in this recent thread I read a similar sentiment

Display logic is also not the same as business logic.

which again seems to drawing a dichotomy between business logic and display logic.

1. Where did this term display logic come from? Is this a common term in software engineering that I missed?
2. AFAICT, business rules drive what is displayed. You wouldnt have a business app without display. And what you display is based on what the business is doing. From my perspective, display logic is one aspect of business logic.

examples

• here an individual tries to use tt to format currency values so that negative numbers are surrounded by parenthesis and positive numbers are not. FWICT, the individual is trying to execute a business rule regarding how currency is displayed.
