It's always been my opinion that you can't program a solution to a problem if you don't understand the problem. And if you can't explain the problem (clearly, cogently) you don't understand the problem.

Before you try to code, explain the solution to yourself, step by step. Assume computers don't exist, what are the steps you take to solve the problem. If you can do that, programming the solution is trivial.
