You don't identify the platform, but on Solaris, the Solaris Crash Analysis Tool (SCAT) (I know, I know - bad/unfortunate abbreviation:-) works wonderfully well for core file analysis - esp. if you
  1. Are signed up to SunSolve - you'll need the login to download and ...
  2. Can get hold of the crash analysis book (c/w its' companion website)..
