I started with MySQL, 2nd Ed. (Visual Quickstart Guide) by Larry Ullman, which has chapters on both PHP and Perl. To complement the O'Reilly title, I'd suggest find the relevant Perl DBI course notes offered by Perl Training Australia. Web Database Applications with PHP and MySQL may also be worth a look
