Need your help to over come my problem to get user name from N/W login prompt .

Problem: I have managed to add my script as secured one and added some users in Apache config files. i am able to restrict the users now .

what i need is to get the user name from the N/W login prompt and i have to perform some database query . The environment variable $ENV{REMOTE_USER} is not returning any values and i tried to use user_name and remote_user( with object ( $q= new CGI )also i.e $q->user_name and $q->remote_user ) but could not able to retrieve any values from N/W login prompt.

need your help to over come from this problem .
