Ahem, er, am I missing something really simple here?
I wouldn't expect this statement to work:- 
if ($foo) {
            print "the date is... $date \n <br>";
         }

[download]
at least not on my Perl version.

Surely, it should be:-
if ($foo) {
            print "The date is...", $date, "\n <br>";
         }

[download]
