My permissions on the file are read/write. I don't know how 'delete' fits in there. I took some more pictures, and I used the camera to tag a few of the pictures so they couldn't be deleted. File::Copy's copy() function was able to copy all the files. So after 2 days of effort and 20 measley lines of code--great success!
Thanks.
Oh, by the way, my original frustration and confusion was caused by this: I was dragging the destination directory's name onto my terminal window when prompted by my script. When you do that on mac os x, the file name is inserted at the point of the cursor in the Terminal window. My idea was that I would first create a destination directory for the files, then run my script, which would prompt me for the directory name, and all I would have to do is drag the directory onto my terminal window. However, the path that was entered when I dragged my file onto my terminal window looked like this:
/Users/me/Pictures/my\ folder\ name
Those slashes preceding the spaces are not required, and in fact I believe they are what was causing me to get a "no such directory error" when using that path with rename().
