I think you want to grep the list returned by $ftp->ls. For example, I case-insensitively get a file like this: 
   ...
   my $guess  = shift;
   my $file   = (grep { /$guess/i } $ftp->ls )[0]
                or return "Couldn't find $guess.\n";
   ...
