BrowserUk's regex is easily modified to provide overlapping matches:
>perl -wMstrict -le "my $s = 'aaabacadaabbbccccd'; print qq{'$1'} while $s =~ m[ (?= ((.) (?! \2) . ) ) ]xmsg;; " 'ab' 'ba' 'ac' 'ca' 'ad' 'da' 'ab' 'bc' 'cd'
