These escape codes are there because your content is encoded as "quoted printable", which should appear in the Content-Encoding or Transport-Encoding headers of the mail or its parts (I never know which and where). The best approach would be to not remove these escape sequences but to decode them, for example using MIME::DecodeText or MIME::Base64::decode_qp.
